North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States.

North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.

The state is composed of 100 counties.

Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte.

In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.

Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use".

Tobacco is a product prepared from the leaves of the tobacco plant by curing them.

The state has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River.

Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland eastern North America.

North America is a continent entirely within the Northern Hemisphere and almost all within the Western Hemisphere.

The Mississippi River is the chief river of the largest drainage system on the North American continent.

The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone.

A humid subtropical climate is a zone of climate characterised by hot, usually humid summers and mild to cold winters.

More than 300 miles from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.

An "oceanic climate" is the climate typical of west coasts in higher middle latitudes of continents, and generally features cool summers and cool winters, with a relatively narrow annual temperature range and few extremes of temperature, with the exception for transitional areas to continental, subarctic or subtropical climates.
