Lights Poxleitner-Bokan, known mononymously as Lights, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician from Timmins, Ontario.

Singer-songwriters are musicians who write, compose, and perform their own musical material including lyrics and melodies.

Ontario is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada and is located in east-central Canada.

She was awarded the 2009 Juno Award for New Artist of the Year and two 2009 Astral Media Radio awards during Canadian Music Week.

The Juno Awards are presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music.

Her debut EP Lights EP was released on September 2008 achieved commercial success which enabled release of her first full-length album, The Listening on September 22, 2009.

Her second album, Siberia was released on October 4, 2011.

Lights was born Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Timmins, Ontario, to missionary parents, Virginia and Eric Poxleitner on 11 April 1987.

She has one older sister, Jess.

She was home-schooled and was also taught guitar by her father.

She produced her first song "Saturn's Rings" with an eight-track recorder she purchased with inheritance money from her grandmother in 2001.

She spent her childhood in many parts of the world, including the Philippines, Jamaica and Ontario.

She moved to Toronto at the age of 11 and changed her legal name to Lights.

Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario.

As there was already a signed band named "Lights", having her name officially changed was a way to use it despite prior use.
